LOVE these chews!, May 6, 2011

This review is from: Get Naked Puppy Health Dental Chew Sticks for Puppies and Dogs, Small/6.2-Ounce, 18 sticks/Pack (Misc.)

It is awesome to find a dental chew that is safe for a teething puppy AND nutritious. I also love that it has cranberries in it to help my little girl’s urinary health; and DHA to help her developing brain. My 4 month old Lhasa Apso puppy, Alexi, goes crazy for these! She polishes a small one off in about 15 minutes. I’ve considered getting the large ones to keep her chewing longer, but I worry that they might be a bit too big. These are a fantastic value and are much cheaper than similar brands. I tried the CET dental chews, and they made her terribly sick (and I won’t consider Greenies at any age due to the ingredients). Alexi eats a corn-free, gluten-free, wheat-free, soy-free diet, and these fit the bill perfectly. She eats Canidae Lamb and Rice as her food and gets these and Zuke’s for treats and chews. I’m happy to have a puppy in great health, and I am relieved to find something that she loves to chew on while her mouth hurts from teething. Also, these don’t leave a mess on my carpet, and they sit perfectly on her little tummy. Really, I am addicted to this product. Also, the price is great for 18 of them! I got the antioxidant ones for my Mom to give to her older dogs.

My patterdale terrier loves these chew sticks. They keep him occupied for awhile, depending on how hungry he is. They smell nice (considering they are dog treats of course!) and aren’t overly hard like some chews. Give them a try!

This is my dog’s FAVORITE flavor of the Blue Buffalo biscuits. The only reason I gave this review 4 stars is because the bars were all broken up when I received them. I guess this is because of shipment but I will likely just buy biscuits in a store from now on to avoid so many broken pieces.

incredible. Able to replace NSAID with this supplement, June 2, 2010
By
Concerned Counsel “E” (Princeton, NJ United States) – See all my reviews

This review is from: Liquid Health K-9 Glucosamine with OptiMSM, Hip and Joint Formula, 32-Ounce Unit (Grocery)

I could not recommend this product more highly. I have a 12 year old german shepherd who suffers with arthritis. Our vet had prescribed Meloxicam, an NSAID. However, that category of drugs carries significant risks (ulcer formation as well as kidney or liver damage or failure). In my companion’s case, it caused an ulcer even though I gave him Pepcid before each dose of Meloxicam.

A store owner recommended this product, and within less than one week, there was so much improvement I was able to completely discontinue the NSAID, and my dog is now even better than he was when he was on the NSAID medication.

Please note though that this is not the best concentration for large breed dogs. I learned that Liquid Health’s ‘L-5000’ is designed for large dogs and is more highly concentrated. It too, is extremely effective.

I strongly urge the use of this supplement before resorting to medications that can cause serious to fatal internal damage.

My dog also finds it palatable, and I have not had any trouble feeding it to him, I just mix it in with his kibbles twice daily.

I have literally only used it for a few times in the past 8 months! I now also have my son buying it for his pomeranian, who also has bad back legs. KEEP selling this product I will buy it constantly!!!!!!

I’ve been supplementing with K-9 Liquid Health Glucosamine/chond with MSM for well over a year now and I know my senior dogs have a better quality of life because of it. So much so that I am also giving it preemtively to my younger dogs. It’s easy to administer; I just pour it on their dry food. They’ve never turned up their nose at it.

Dr. Earl Mindell’s Nutrition and Health for Dogs

Dr. Earl Mindell’s Nutrition and Health for Dogs

In this updated second edition of “Dr.Earl Mindell’s Nutrition and Health for Dogs,” the renowned author of “The Vitamin Bible” and his coauthor, Elizabeth Renaghan, focus on how a dog’s body functions nutritionally. They point out that, overall, a dog’s body functions much the same as a human’s body and has similar nutritional requirements. Although some canine needs differ from people’s, dogs also thrive on good nutrition, exercise, clean water, and love-and for optimal health, specific foods and vitamin/mineral supplements. The authors discuss easy, flexible, and affordable ways to keep one’s dog healthy, and elaborate on the different nutritonal requirements of different breeds. They explain why each nutrient discussed is needed, and recommend size-appropriate amounts of them for dogs ranging from small to giant. “Dr. Earl Mindell’s Nutrition and Health for Dogs” is devided into seven informative parts. Part One is all about creating optimum nutrition for one’s dog. In the parts that follow, the authors talk about why it is important to keep a dog’s immune system healthy; they devote a section to natural flea control, and another to homeopathy, an increasingly popular, and highly effective, therapy for dogs; they delve into the five most common dog diseases, and other common canine ailments, and finally, they give an alphabetical, breed-specific listing of potential health problems for dogs. This manual is an important alternative to the multi-million-dollar dog-food industry, which wants people to believe that a dog is happiest when receiving the exact same foods day after day. Nothing could be further from the truth. Nutritional variety is every bit as important for a dog as it is for a dog’s owner, and dogs, lke people, thirve on a mix of fresh foods including frutis and vegetables.

Pretty good but lacks in precision on a few minor points and one major, August 12, 2009
By
S. Smith (Minneapolis, MN) – See all my reviews

This review is from: Dr. Earl Mindell’s Nutrition and Health for Dogs (Paperback)

I really enjoyed this book for the most part as it offers very SPECIFIC information regarding vitamin and mineral supplementation, not just vague “rules of thumb.” He actually gives you dosages and explains in non-medical language what the vitamins do, why they’re important, and in which foods many can be found. Herein lies my first major cause for alarm: he suggests red grapes as a nutritional form of the trace mineral selenium (p.39)– this is a potentially deadly recommendation as grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs. Dogs who ingest grapes or raisins can develop acute kidney failure and in many cases die. Please do some verifying online and with your veterinarian before taking this recommendation from the book and if in doubt, err on the side of caution and avoid grape products.

The second gripe I have is in regards to his discussion of stress in puppies and adult dogs. This topic is breached around p. 60 and is in reference to how emotional stress can weaken the immune system. While Mindell’s observations are certainly valid from the physical standpoint, he neglects the long-term behavioral implications of his recommendation for owners to attempt to eliminate their dog’s stressors altogether or treat a hyperactive dog with natural remedies such as B-complex, Valarian, kava, and magnesium. Another approach that isn’t mentioned is to introduce stressful situations, such as riding in the car or meeting a new dog, in a controlled, proactive way (potentially with the assistance of a dog trainer). A person doesn’t do their dog any favors by sheltering them from environmental stressors because it’s almost inevitable that the dog will come face to face with the stressor eventually. Starting from puppyhood a dog should be taught how to approach and deal with unfamiliar (and thus stressful) situations. A dog who is not socialized with uncomfortable sounds, sights, and sensations early on is likely to become MORE fearful of these things later in life and potentially lash out in an aggressive manner. I would have liked to have seen a broader approach to dealing with this topic since it deals directly with animal behavior.

It should also be noted that he advocates a raw diet and minimal vaccinations. For those who don’t align with that camp, be forewarned! In all, I think I’m still on-board with Dr. Mindell, but he definitely shook my confidence with that grape recommendation.

The Health Benefits of Dog Walking for People and Pets: Evidence and Case Studies (New Directions in the Human-Animal Bond Series)

The Health Benefits of Dog Walking for People and Pets: Evidence and Case Studies (New Directions in the Human-Animal Bond Series)

Obesity is a national epidemic in the United States. It is estimated that by 2018 the cost of treating weight-related illnesses will double to almost 0 billion a year, while a 2010 report by the US Surgeon General estimates that two-thirds of American adults and almost one in three children are now overweight or obese. This volume originated in a special 2009 symposium funded in part by a grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and sponsorship from Mars Waltham® on how human-animal interaction may help fight obesity across the lifespan. The authors present scientific evidence about the benefits of dog walking for improving human and animal health, and case studies of programs that are using this powerful expression of the human-animal bond to combat obesity. The volume is especially valuable as a sourcebook of evidence-based studies for public health professionals treating overweight humans and veterinarians treating obese dogs.

A bible for dog owners, present and future, January 18, 2004
This review is from: Dogs: The Ultimate Care Guide: Good Health, Loving Care, Maximum Longevity (Paperback)

As a first time puppy owner of an Old English Sheep Dog, I bought this book to help me through the mystifying world (to me) of dog care, and absolutely loved it.

The guide is by far the most comprehensive, yet easy to read, with easy to follow instructions of many books that I have seen out there, some of which I own. Each topic is covered in about 2 pages, yet they contain enough detail and handy advice for the new dog owner to feel confident about his or her new relationship. Building that confidence leads to a well-behaved, confident pet, and the tremendous pleasure of ownership of another being.

The guide is divided into several useful sections as follows:

1. Getting acquainted – what kind of dog should you get? Coverage on the top 50 breeds in the US (although unfortunately my lovely puppy wasn’t in it). How to deal with new puppy, how to read your dog’s body language.

2. Training – everything from house-training your puppy, through to basic and advanced training. It also has a very useful section on correcting unwanted behavior such as chasing cares, digging, anxiety and much more.

3. Essential care – what you need to do to keep your dog fit and healthy. What kinds of toys to buy, whether to leave your pet in or out, and traveling with your dog.

4. Food – Nutrition, water, eating problems, snacks and special diets.

5. Health watch – preventing sickness and common problems, choosing a vet, neutering, breeding/birthing and caring for older dogs.

6. Easing common complaints – what to do about bad breath, bloating, sunburn and ticks, and many other quirks like flatulence and drooling.

7. First aid – in case your dog (I hope it never happens to you) needs emergency care.

8. Looking good – grooming and washing your dog.

These useful and crucial topics are interspersed with dialog boxes (Paws for Thought) that address questions you’ve thought about but never expected to get an answer on, such as “do dogs fake being hurt?” (p.300), or “why do dogs stick their heads out of car windows?” (p.202),

The book, not surprisingly, boasts contributors ranging from veterinarians, trainers, groomers and other animal experts.

So far, everything I have needed to know, or any questions I had about my dog, has been in this book. It’s the first place I look to for answers. In short, this amazing book has been like a bible for me to raise my new puppy (and how to deal with all that long shaggy hair!). I highly recommend it for any present, new or future dog owner.

This review is from: Dogs: The Ultimate Care Guide: Good Health, Loving Care, Maximum Longevity (Paperback)

I’ve been a dog owner for my whole life. Every one of my dogs has gone through at least basic obedience. I found the information on behavior to be light, general and based on common sense. Probably a good starting place for a beginner. Bot if you’ve had a bunch of dogs, like people they are all very different. What floats one dog’s boat does nothing for the next one. I was hoping for more insight on curbing bad dog behavior.

This book is pretty conventional but it is well written and informative, and it has a definite place in all dog-lovers library. I also like that it has a lot of pictures which makes it easy and fun to read.

It would make a great gift for someone who is thinking about getting a dog and to all the new dog owners.

I would recommend this book TOGETHER with “The Whole Dog Journal’s Guidebook to Dog and Puppy Care and Training”. These 2 make a perfect package: whatever one is missing, the other has!

Your Dog Needs This Book!, September 27, 2003
    By
“tashidelek” (Chicago, Illinois United States) – See all my reviews

This review is from: The Complete Holistic Dog Book: Home Health Care for Our Canine Companions (Paperback)

When I saw the word "complete" in the title, I thought the
publisher was probably stretching the truth…but now that I’ve read it I think the title does not go far enough in describing it. This book covers alot more than health care. For instance, under caring for an older dog, the tips are practical, simple, and have nothing to do with medicine or illness. Simple things like buying the dog a softer bed. Life style changes that may not cure, as somethings cannot be, but can make your dog
    alot happier.

Dog care books are usually either written by a vet, who takes the linear Western medicine approach, or a holistic practianer who never sees the need to darken a doctor’s office. This book is written in a partnership between a vet and a holistic person and the book shows the wisdom of both and suggests when and how to use either one or both of the approaches. Good common sense abounds. And always practical information. In a section on diabetes the authors list the dog breeds most likely to be susceptible. If you have one of these breeds it may make recognizing the signs easier. They do this for most of the diseases they discuss.

And they discuss alot more. Prevention, diet, homeopathy, herbs, TCM. bodywork, alternative therapies and conventional medicine, and more. It’s a fat book packed with info.

If you have a dog, you need this book….though in truth I think alot of what they say can be applied to any animal, including the human.

The one book I reference consistently, March 9, 2006
    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: The Complete Holistic Dog Book: Home Health Care for Our Canine Companions (Paperback)

I have a variety of books on health for dogs, which I reference often. I noticed lately, however, that I’ve gone to this book first over and over and often I don’t need to look at any of my other books. I usually cross reference material, but I’ve found valididated information from several other sources in this book so often that I save myself the trouble and just reference this book now.

Rarely do I find a “the only book you’ll need” in any book, but this one definitely has it all, and the information is not extreme. The authors recognize balance, recognize that there are a variety of methods to attack a problem, and they present each method thoroughly and non-judgmentally.

For example, if a dog is vomiting and has nausea, they first differentiate between acute and chronic. If acute, they first give information on nutritional support, then homeopathy, then herbs, then accupressure and finally other methods including flower essences and considering addressing the dog’s emotional state. If chronic, they are just as thorough but give other paths to follow in trying to treat the dog’s vomiting.

In addition to concrete suggestions for treating many health problems, very clear and professionally drawn illustrations abound throughout the book. In the section for vomiting, one drawing shows the dog’s digestive tract and another the accupressure points for the digestive tract. When referring to the illustration in the text, the authors also reference corresponding charts and additional illustrations in another part of the book (and give page numbers!) that will further explain information regarding that particular illustration, such as finding the exact meridian point on the dog.

The treatments the authors focus on in the book include diet, homeopathy, herbs, accupressure, acupuncture, TCM, bodywork, and energy medicine. The authors touch on a few other areas of therapy but they focus primarily on the topics just mentioned.

I found the illustrations to be extremely valuable. They are peppered throughout the book showing parts of the dog that are relevant to the corresponding text. The illustrations aren’t too detailed; they have just enough to explain. They’re clear, concise, and easy to understand.

Overall, this is the best comprehensive book on holistic dog care on my shelf. I’m gradually getting rid of the others because they don’t compare at all to the accurately named, “The Complete Holistic Dog Book.”

    A Skeptic’s Reaction, November 10, 2003
    By
Janet Starr (Hailey, Idaho) – See all my reviews

This review is from: The Complete Holistic Dog Book: Home Health Care for Our Canine Companions (Paperback)

I sat down with this book intending to go through it in a “first time kind of glance through” way and ended up reading it for four hours – non stop.

I started with the homeopathy section which had an excellent discussion on how the remedies are made and used. I am a novice in this area of medicine but found the explanations clear, concise, and informative.

I then turned to the puppy section – and found a wealth of valuable information on the importance of puppy socialization – how exposing my puppy to lots of different people, dogs and places, (after their vaccination series is complete, of course!), helps him learn manners, gives him confidence, and allows me the luxury and joy of taking him with me to many places without having to worry about his behavior. The book also discusses how to select a good and compassionate trainer.

There is a section on “Letting Go” – always a difficult and painful part of sharing one’s life with an animal. I found the author’s advice personal and heartfelt.

The chapters on new vaccination protocols and nutrition are informative and complete. Although the two authors recommend a homemade diet, they also tell the reader how to select a high quality commercial diet, as well.

I appreciate the author’s balanced view and the fact that they explain the “why” of things – something which is often lacking in many books. Excellent.

The book is loaded with helpful tables and graphs and personal stories. In addition, there are great photos of “Found Dogs” sprinkled throughout the book.

It is obvious these two authors love their topic and want to improve the lives of puppies, dogs, and their people. I will recommend it highly.

    Linda Tellington-Jones knows!, April 21, 2003

This review is from: Getting in TTouch with Your Dog: An Easy, Gentle Way to Better Health and Behavior (Paperback)

I will graduate as a TellingtonTTouch Practitioner in July 2003. Please do not think that this will predispose me to think well of this book. I think well of this book because I _know_ it works. When I first started this training, one of my dogs was a lunging, snarling maniac around other dogs. This training has made all the difference!

The book presents the TTouch method in a clear, logical way that any animal owner can use. I have used this method, with great sucess, on dogs, cats, & ferrets.

The wonderful "meet them where they are" & "not expect anything more than they are capable of" philosophy honors the animal and the human.

I would recommend this book to any one who wants a deeper connection with their animals.

This book not only has good insight to dogs needs but illustrates the tTouch. It very much compliments the tape on this same subject.I’m sure happy I got it. So are my 3 dogs.

This review is from: Getting in TTouch with Your Dog: An Easy, Gentle Way to Better Health and Behavior (Paperback)

This is a simple guide book for dog owners who are interested in learning some easy hands-on techniques to help calm their pet. The information was easy to follow and my dog loves to be petted using these techniques.

I learned the basic philosophy after reading the book once.

    Great CD!!!, March 5, 2008

I love this CD! And so do my dogs! Wow, its so great. Very relaxing music, so I can enjoy listening to it too. Within 20 minutes of putting this in, all three dogs – even the hyper puppy – are laying down and chilling (: And believe me that is a rare moment in a house with 3 dogs.

What a great tool for problems like separation anxiety too. I can’t wait till they come out with more!

Interesting book and great CD, April 1, 2008

Since adopting a rescued dog with separation anxiety, I have come to know a lot of the canine soothing strategies and music. This book is filled with fascinating information about how both dogs and humans respond to the sound in our environment. The CD Through a Dog’s Ear is my favorite of the 10 or more canine soothing CDs I now own. Not only do the dogs seem to enjoy it, every person who has heard it has commented on how relaxing the music is. I rotate through my other canine soothing CDs, but this CD stays in the CD player all the time.

    Through a dog’s ears, April 8, 2008

Since we have been using this cd my dog’s are calm when we come home after a long 8-9 hours at work. In the past they were restless and tense waiting for us. They got into things and seemed lonely. Now they are peaceful and calm. They only start to get excited after we are home. This sure beats giving my one dog a doggie prosac to keep here calm to help her separation anxiety.. The trick is to put it continuous repeat all day.
