Biologically Appropriate But Unnecessarily Restrictive, June 26, 2000
This review is from: Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats (Paperback)

This is an only slightly revised/updated version of Schultze’s original spiralbound book "The Ultimate Diet." There are several books on feeding natural/raw/whole foods to dogs, and Schultze’s book is the most restrictive, as it does not allow any grains, dairy products, blackstrap molasses, or raw honey (which many experienced breeders using holistic methods consider a "must" in dog rearing). Unfortunately many people new to raw feeding read Schultze’s book and become convinced that giving their dogs even small amounts of whole grains or a little yogurt with raw honey is tantamount to poisoning them! Those of us who have been feeding a fresh foods diet for decades know that nothing is farther from the truth, but Kymythy believes that *all* dogs do better without grains, dairy, honey, etc., and of course her book includes testimonials only from people who agree with her. While it’s true that some dogs do indeed fare better on a no grains/no dairy diet, others do much better on a more varied diet that includes small amounts of whole grains, yogurt or kefir, blackstrap molasses, and other foods Schultze feels should be avoided.
My biggest problem with this book, however, is that Schultze repeatedly passes of some rather controversial opinions as scientific fact. Not surprisingly, no footnotes are provided to back up any of her claims. She also uses the cancer research from Colorado State’s veterinary school to imply that feeding grains and dairy products causes cancer. While it’s correct that a diet high in certain fats and low in simple carbs is recommended for dogs with cancer (as well as those in remission), there is absolutely no evidence that a diet without grains and dairy products helps to *prevent* cancer. In fact, even the cancer diet recommended by Colorado State includes small amounts of whole grains. Cancer causes metabolic changes in the body which makes what is optimal for dogs with cancer not necessarily optimal for healthy dogs.
Of course I’m not recommending a grain-based diet (I agree that raw muscle and organ meats and meaty bones should make up the bulk of the canine diet), but small amounts of whole grain and cultured dairy products (e.g., yogurt, kefir) can add variety and valuable nutrients to the diet. Dogs, like humans, are individuals and it’s important to remember that there is no one diet that is perfect for every dog.
Depending on the exact composition of Schultze’s diet, deficiencies in certain nutrients are quite possible, and I would definitely not recommend a diet so low in carbohydrates for in-whelp bitches. On the other hand, if you have a dog with cancer or allergies to grains/dairy, this diet may be just what you’ve been looking for. It’s easy to follow, but I do suggest reading a little more on canine nutrition.

Thinking about a natural food diet for your pet?, November 30, 1999
This review is from: Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats (Paperback)

If you are, I highly recommend this book. It’s written in a easy to read style and is a great introduction on what is needed to successfully implement a raw food diet. This book covers a variety of material, including nutrition aspects, how to make up a meal, how to switch your animal over, and a basic guideline with amounts of various ingredients listed.

The book itself is spiral bound, making it easy to set on the counter the first couple of times you try the menu. There are 118 pages, which includes a natural care yellow pages at the end. Included in these pages are a list of books and newsletters to further your understanding.

The last chapter of testimonials from various people who have switched their pets over to a raw foods diet are touching and inspirational. This book made it easy for me to understand the benefits and the mechanics of a natural diet, that I’ve been left wondering why I didn’t switch my dog over sooner.

Too basic, even for a beginner, July 28, 2004
By

(REAL NAME)

This review is from: Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats (Paperback)

I was new to RAW feeding prior to buying this book. I had done some research and reading on the Internet and already understood the concept of RAW feeding – the core food groups and the recommended proportions of each. However, I needed a book that would help me make the transition from just reading to actually preparing the meals for my pets. This book did not do it for me. It is more of a very basic "theory" book than a "practical" one. I bought the book online – if I had had a chance to flip through it first, I would have gone with another book.

This book pretty much just explains what the food groups are, how they contribute to the health of your pets and the respective pros and cons. But, like I said, you can get this information for FREE on the Internet! Schultze only gives ONE easy recipe for BOTH dogs and cats, with varying amounts of ingredients depending on the weight of your pet. After joining a few RAW feeding discussion lists, I was told that most of the things I read in the book are NOT recommended by fellow raw feeders (eg: feeding GROUND meat, veggies, kelp & alfalfa supplements and BOTH cod-liver oil and fish oil, etc.) Even I knew going in that you can’t use the same recipe for both dogs and cats and yet Schultze only provides one recipe. Cats, I am told, especially don’t need veggies, kelp or alfalfa and they don’t need cod liver oil.

This book would have been more useful had I not done any of my own research first so overall I found the content to be quite disappointing. Somewhat informative but NOT very practical.

By
Angelique York (Southlake, Texas, USA) – See all my reviews

This review is from: Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats : Your A-Z Guide to Over 200 Conditions, Herbs, Vitamins, and Supplements (Paperback)

Dr. Messonnier’s aproach to natural health for dogs and cats is neither too complicated for the average person to follow nor too far-out to work in conjunction with a traditional family vet’s advice. Good, practical information is presented in "real person" language, making this book an excellent guide for anyone concerned about their dog or cat’s health.
In addition to information that will help you keep your pet healthy, Dr. Messonnier introduces various types of complimentary and alternative therapies for sick or injured pets. He instructs readers on how to use these treatments alone, or in conjunction with traditional medicine, to ensure a holistic approach to pet health. Readers can choose the best path to their pet’s wellness by using the more familiar route, or by combining techniques to meet their dog or cat’s need.
This book is a must for any pet owner who thinks outside the box of traditional pet health care.

An excellent, common sense approach to caring for your pet., December 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats (Paperback)

I love my dog and have always been concerned about the chemicals, dyes and other additives found in most commercial dog foods. I have talked to many veterinarians who are unconcerned about the rancid meat scraps, etc. that are put into kibble. Although I have found a product containing no chemical additives, I still felt guilty about feeding my dog something that I wouldn’t expect a person to be able to live on. I have read many books on dog health, and was not impressed by any of them. Then I read Dr. Pitcairn’s book. It was intelligent, well written and made perfect sense. The only inhibition I had about starting a natural diet for my dog was the cost. I’m a graduate student and money is tight. However, I started supplementing my dog’s kibble with Pitcairn’s suggested recepies. She is bouncing and playing like a puppy, her teeth are cleaner and her coat has gone from dull to shiny. I am so impressed by the changes I’ve seen, I have decided to eliminate the kibble entirely. Feeding my dog a natural food diet is much easier and less expensive than I thought. I have already extolled the virtues of this book to all of my dog owning friends and would highly recommend it to anyone who cares about the health of their animal. A wonderful book!

One of the best books on holistic pet health, October 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats (Paperback)

For the dedicated pet owner who needs information about nutrition and the real facts about commercial pet food. Along with The Holistic Guide For A Healthy Dog, this is one of the best sources of information on nutrition and how it affects your pets health.I have a 6 year old Rott/Shepard mix who has hip dysplasia and is very overweight. The traditional vet I saw recommended Science Diet low calorie food to take the weight off, but when I read the ingredients(the FIRST ingredient is peanut shell hulls AND it contains BHT and ethoxyquin both known to cause serious health problems in dogs including cancer!!) I just couldn’t subject my dog to the risk of new health problems just to get him to lose weight. I found a weight loss recipe in Dr. Pitcairns book which I make from scratch and the weight is coming off and my dog has never been healthier. Make sure you question methods your vet suggests, especially if it may compromise your dogs health and arm yourself with this book which will prove to be an invaluable source you will look to again and again.

If you love your animal(s) then read this book!, January 4, 2000
This review is from: Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats (Paperback)

Dr. Pitcairn’s book is a tremendous eye opener. Its full of information that you may otherwise not be aware of. I now know what is in commercial pet food and was horrified. I guarantee that I would NEVER eat it, so why would I give it to my cats? Dr. Pitcairn tells you how you can care for and feed your cat or dog, in a relatively easy manner. I have 4 cats and they have never been healthier. Prior to the dietary change, in a one month period, I had 2 cats that were diagnosed with FUS (urinary tract problems) which were due to diet. Pet food makers suggest low ash diets, but not Dr. Pitcairn. I followed his direction, and now feed my cats a natural, raw, healthy diet. I did this with the blessing of my DVM. My cats love their food, which includes veggies, oats and supplements. All 4 cats have full blown yearly exams and all have had stellar results. They are frisky, happy animals. Their only visits are their annual exams, which are informative more than anything else. I believe that we owe it all to Dr. Pitcairn and his sound, natural advice. Don’t hesitate to read this book, its one that every animal loving, pet owner should have. Its fabulous!

Great book for better diet and health of dogs and cats!, February 4, 2006
By
Denise Bonds (Bay Area California) – See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

This review is from: Dr. Pitcairn’s New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats (Paperback)

You may see some of my other reviews about human health and nutrition, but this is perhaps THE book that prompted me to learn more about MY diet.

Here’s what I liked about the book:

Dr. Pitcairn has a long career in the vetinarian industry. I enjoyed reading about his holistic approach to pet health and diet–treating the root cause, not the symptoms. I like the fact that Dr. Pitcairn chose to think outside the box, so to speak, and look for alternatives early in his career when he found that his patients did not always respond to drugs. Also, the recipes are excellent for ensuring a truly healthy diet.

I can’t think of anything that I did not like about the book.

My story:

I still remember the first time anyone had EVER mentioned to me that dog food is not good for dogs. My husband and I were adding a dog to our family and was going through an interview process with the breeder. She knew that we already have an older dog and she ask about his diet. This was two years ago, and by then, our older dog (11 years old at the time) had lost most of his teeth, and we had (reluctantly) taken him off his kibble diet. When we started feeding him more “table scraps” we noticed some incredible improvements. His coat looked better than it had in his 11 years, he was also very “peppy” and seemed to be overall in great health and spirits. All during his life he had ALWAYS suffered from weird ailments like skin disorders, hot spots, clogged anal glands, dry flaky skin, nasal allergies, etc. I can not count how many times this dog had been on drugs like cortisone and prednisone and bathed in “hypo-allergenic oatmeal-based shampoos”. During my interview with this dog breeder, I did not share with her what my dog had been through, I just said, “…he has lost most of his teeth, and no longer eats kibble”. This is when she told me that I shouldn’t feed him kibble, and I should not feed the new little one kibble either!

This got me curious and I started doing my own research about dog food and was absolutely HORRIFIED to learn the ingredients used to make dog food. How can an entire industry (vetinarians) give such harmful advise?!?! I was and still am outraged at all the people along the way who always advised me to keep my dog on kibble. And I had heard it from so many sources for so many years that I figured they must be right! The day I learned what kibble has in it, my husband and I started cooking for our dogs. There’s been some ups and downs during the last two years, learning what to feed and what not to feed, but overall I believe that both dogs are much healthier and my husband and I definately have peace of mind knowing exactly what they are eating! Oh, and all those skin ailments and allergies that the older dog suffered from for 11 years?…not a SINGLE episode in the past two years!

I found this book to be very helpful in understanding what dogs need to be healthy. I learned that generally speaking, we were doing most things right. We did make some changes in the supplements based on Dr. Pitcairn’s recommendations and we replaced the white rice we had been feeding with oatmeal–which both dogs seem to like. But overall, a lot of his recommendations were very similar to the advise we received from the breeder.

The older dog is now 13 years old and was diagnosed with Inflammatory Brain Disease about 2 months ago. We are obviously very devastated and I believe whole-heartedly that this brain disease was brought on by the poor diet and also the “top-spot” flea poison he had been on all his life. I found out AFTER his diagnosis that top-spot has been linked to this disease…as this is the same way the poison kills the fleas–it attacks their nervous system!–we had treated him with Frontline just four days before he became ill and was carried to UC Davis Vetinary Teaching Hospital.

Whether you decide to buy this book or not, I strongly advise you to do your own research about your pet’s diet and decide for yourself. Some would say that cooking/preparing meals for their pets is a hassle, but this is the least you can do for all the benefits you will get from your healthier pet–not to mention the money you’ll save from not taking your dog to the vet all the time to treat symptoms of a poor diet!

Review from Kim Bloomer, Owner of Aspenbloom Pet Care, August 22, 2005
By

This review is from: Dr. Pitcairn’s New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats (Paperback)

I recently obtained Dr. Pitcairn’s book and found it to be a wonderful, easy to implement and understand book on natural care for dogs and cats. Dr. Pitcairn provides concise information on dogs and cats from what to feed, to training, and even about how to choose a dog breed for your lifestyle. This book also has lots of natural prevention remedies included and how to PREVENT pesky problems like fleas and ticks from invading your home and your pets.

One of the things I educate pet owners on is prevention being the key and that is done through a strong immune system by feeding and supplementing properly. I always tell them that once your pet is diseased you’ll need to see a veterinarian and then undo the illness and disease if you can, then build your pet back up. Dr. Pitcairn shares a lot about prevention and that thrilled me! That is the answer and key to keeping our pets healthy.

He shares about natural feeding which is another big issue I like to tackle with pet owners. He even includes grooming. This is a must have book for any dog or cat owner who wants to approach their pet care naturally and preventatively. Excellent book!

I’d reviewed the 2nd edition version when I was looking into a more natural diet for my puppies on the advice of my holistic vet. In fact I was using the diet until my youngest started gaining weight and they were worried that the grains were causing the weight gain. I switched to raw meat and pureed veggies instead. Turns out that she was low thyroid.

The diets are still heavy on grains. Great for the majority of dogs I’m sure. The upside is that there are nutritional analysis of all the diets included so you know why you’re including each of the components. There are also special diets included for allergies, weight loss and gain.

I also like the information on various health issues and vaccinosis that is included.

The missing guide to having a dog has finally been found, September 1, 2007
By
L. Pilgrim (Washington DC, for the moment) – See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

I have had a dog since 1992 and have often searched for a book to consult when my dog seems a little “off,” acts a little sick, gets a little hurt — especially because it typically costs 0 to 0 just to visit a vet, and then if a bunch of tests are performed, the bill grows. Hundreds or thousands of dollars later, you are told that everything is going to be okay. Or worse, I don’t go to the vet right away when my dog has had a little something wrong for a while that I ignored because I thought it was “no big deal” etc. and I could not identify a book or a website that gave me any productive information.

Instead, I found many books over the years that (1) provide a few pages of information that are applicable to my dog, and me or (2) provide me with indecipherable technical information suitable for veterinary student. For some reason there has never been any book in which the ENTIRE book is useful and understandable and applicable to my dog or my friends’ dogs. Even an online search reveals the same polar extremes of information, unless you are “feeling lucky,” which I never am. Perhaps this is because some vets rely on those stupid little questions that turn out to be nothing for their income or they are just a little too cautious, or they understandably don’t want to give advice over the phone without seeing your dog? (I don’t know the answer.)

However! When I discovered What’s Wrong with My Dog?, I thought to myself: “This is the book I’ve been looking for–for more than 15 years!!! I love it. It’s easy to read, written with a sense of humor, AND totally provides professional advice from an ACTUAL VET who was willing to potentially give up some easy office visits to provide dog owners with answers to simple questions. Oh, but apparently, he doesn’t have an office; he makes house calls (you’ll see his mode of transport in a picture in the back of the book. If I said words like “hoot,” I would say it is one!). So…maybe he was hoping to avoid a few extra trips??? I don’t know, but it was a generous endeavor–a gift of accessible information. Thank you, Dr. Tedaldi, for finally writing this book.

A beautiful book by an extraordinary vet, October 24, 2007
By

Jake Tedaldi is without a doubt the best veterinarian our family has ever known. This book is a great contribution to human-dog communication. If our dogs could speak to us they would tell us many of these things, but instead Dr. Tedaldi speaks for them, in clear and reassuring language, not flinching from the sometimes startling or upsetting things our dogs are going through, but always giving their humans great guidance on how to be their best friend. This is the kind of book you can pick up in the middle of the night to find out what to do if your dog has just been sprayed by a skunk. Or maybe you just can’t figure out why “my dog keeps smacking her lips.” It’s organized into sections such as “my dog has something stuck” and “my dog seems sick.” It is a very practical book written with affection and compassion for both sides of the human-dog equation.

Great Information on Dog Health Issues, October 7, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

I recently adopted a little long-haired stray from the city pound. I was instructed not to bathe him for at least ten days because he had just been neutered the day I picked him up. The poor dog’s hair was very matted and he smelled something fierce. And, worst of all, he was constantly scratching and he seemed to be miserable. I thought the odor and scratching were just natural, because he probably had not had a good bath since forever. After the waiting period passed he got his bath and his hair was trimmed. To my dismay, I discovered that he had a horrible skin condition. His skin was crusty and oozing and in some spots it was very irritated because he had been scratching so much. I even thought it was mange. I also discovered that he had a discharge from the right eye and his skin was irritated in that area.

I thought of taking him to the vet, but first I decided to do some research in the Internet and I came across this book at Amazon. I have not read the whole book yet, but I thumbed through it and read, among other items, the sections that were pertinent to my dog’s condition. I am happy to report that, after following the book’s advice, my dog’s skin is now in perfect condition. He is not miserable any more, no scratching, no sores, no crusts. The bare spot on the inside of his right eye has has all but disappeared and the discharge has cleared completely.

I am not saying that I will never have to take my pet to the vet because I have this book. In fact, in several sections of the book Dr. Tedaldi suggests the pet should be taken to the vet right away. However, I know for a fact that I saved several hundred dollars and paid for the book many times over with just the advice that I got for the problems described above.

The book has 304 pages. It has a table of contents and an index, and is divided into 18 Parts. Part 1 lists what a dog owner needs in his/her Canine First-Aid Kit and some basic information on first-aid treatments. The remaining Parts and sub-parts describe the conditions a dog may present. I am not going to list all the parts and sub-parts because they are very numerous, but some of the titles are: My dog is bleeding from her eye; My dog has irritated skin on her face; My dog has dark areas on his skin; My dog is gulping or swallowing strangely; My dog has something stuck in his paw; etc., etc. Each Part and sub-part follows a uniform format. First Dr. Tedaldi describes what to look for, then he explains what to do. Also included in every Part and sub-part are frames entitled “Warning” and “When to Get to the Vet”. The book has a few photos and drawings as well. I found this book to be very well organized, extremely useful, clear and informative.
