Norwegian Elkhound History
The Norwegian Elkhound is no run-of-the-mill dog breed – he is the national dog breed of Norway! This spitz type dog has a long and remarkable past, having kept company with early Vikings going back as far as 800 to 1000 AD. Not only that, archaeologists have found fossils of skeletal remains of dogs resembling those of the Norwegian Elkhound in west Norway that date back to 4000 to 5000 BC.
Over the many centuries that this attractive dog has been around, the Norwegian Elkhound has been used to pull sleds, hunt big game such as Moose and Elk (thus the name) and guard home and hearth. Today’s Norwegian Elkhounds even excel in mountain rescue.
