I just joined a TRACKING CLUB IN HOUSTON. My dogs are shown in Conformation/obedience/Field Trials/Rally/therapy and Earth dog. I have written several papers on the topic of piebald mini dachshunds - one is called "THE S-SPOTTING GENE" - explaining the genetics behind the whole gene and the other paper is "A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME" and this explains my breeding program. Because I am in the Miniature dachshund club, I have a wealth of information at my finger tips, in case some question needs to be answered that is beyond me. So after you walk out the door with your Miniature Dachshund puppy, you still have my help if you desire. Ten years or even twenty years of dog breeding is not enough to get rid of genetic problems - it takes a lifetime and it takes a great number of reputable breeders to work together to rid a breed of problems. As in humans, but with a lesser degree, many genetic problems of the dog have not been fully studied, so little is known of some of these problems. There are many great strides happening in this area now. The worst thing a pet buyer can come up against is a breeder that knows their dogs have problems but wont try to correct it or cull against it. Many Miniature Dachshund puppy producers breed dapple to dapple or dapple to piebald and will get problems related to combining the two white genes , like blindness or deafness and continue to breed for these colors regardless what it does to the pups health. There are Miniature Dachshund breeders of dapples that test their dogs eyes and ears which will lower the possibilities by quiet a bit but a producer who is just breeding to produce the pattern will not spend the money to do the tests necessary to make their dogs more healthy. A pattern is best represented when it isn't mixed with another pattern. (Like dapple/Pie & dapple/brindle) I do, however, love the brindle/cream and the brindle/piebald Miniature Dachshund, as long as the pattern is clear and easy to see. I don't believe chocolate brindle is worth breeding, nor do I believe most red dapples have clear lovely patterns. But this is my opinion. The piebald pattern in the Dachshund is like any other spotted hound dog - it doesn't affect the dog any way and has been selected for in other breeds so the hunter could see the dog better in the field, or it was chosen for its beauty. As a matter of fact, the Dachshund and Basset Hound came from the same stock about 2 hundred years ago. There were kennels of white Dachshunds, but they may have been a combination of the S-spotting gene and the dapple gene so this created problems. 80% of the breeds today are in the S-spotting gene. And these spotted pure breds have been bred together for centuries without problems. So the spotted Miniature Dachshund is really not that rare. You will find puppy producers breeding it all over as fast as they can so they can charge huge amounts to pet people who think it is rare. All they have is a poor specimen with a spotted coat. And that is an important point - a well bred dog can function better throughout its life better than one with conformational faults. My goal is to breed a Miniature Dachshund dog that can go in front of a judge and win fair and square because of its beauty and wonderful temperament. Thank you for your interest.
