| Once exploited in the illicit
sports of bull baiting and pit fighting, the English
Bulldog, a sweet-tempered, dignified and loveable dog is now
considered among some of the most popular family pets.
Originating in Britain, the English Bulldog descends from
the Mastiff breeds and selectively bred to overcome a bull
or hold it's own in the pit - thus the rather unique
physical stature. When laws were made forbidding these
inhumane sports, English Bulldog breed fanciers began to
preserve promote and protect the breed as a valued family
pet. The English Bulldog was one of the first breeds to be
granted official recognition when The Kennel Club (England)
was organized in 1873. English Bulldogs are short, heavy-set
dogs that can weigh as much as 50 pounds. The English
Bulldog's fine, straight and flat coat comes in shades of
brindle, white, red or piebald. These stable, intelligent,
loving and affectionate dogs make exceptional family pets.
English Bulldogs love attention, and get along well with
other dogs, children and family pets. English Bulldogs do
well in almost any type of living quarters, from city
apartments to country acreages. English Bulldog grooming
requirements are moderate; they should receive a thorough
brushing once a week, and their wrinkles should be cleaned
daily (an easy 5 minute task). English Bulldogs tend to
drool a little bit. They snore too! |

History: |
| As British as Big Ben, the English Bulldog
is believed to have evolved from the Molossian dog first
brought to Britain by Phoenician traders in the 6th century
BC. The English Bulldog breed was exploited in the sport of
bull baiting, a practice that existed from Roman times.
Though the English Bulldog may appear to be oddly made, each
point of its structure was bred into the breed to aid or
protect it while attempting to overcome a bull. When bull
baiting was outlawed early in the 19th century, the future
looked bleak for the English Bulldog until a handful of
breeders set to preserving this breed that had become a
symbol of British courage and tenacity. When The Kennel Club
(England) was organized in 1873, the English Bulldog was
among the first of the breeds to be recognized. |
