About the Afghan Hound
When it comes to glamour, the Afghan Hound has it in spades.
Originating in Afghanistan, this tall, graceful breed is thought
to be an ancient member of the Greyhound family. The Afghan
Hound's long, silky coat was developed to protect the breed from
the cold, harsh climate of Afghanistan, after the breed was
brought there from the warmer climates of Arabia and Persia.
Afghan Hounds found their way to the Western world after British
soldiers discovered them near the border between India and
Afghanistan in the late 1800's. Afghan Hounds were initially
referred to in the show circuit as Oriental Greyhounds when they
were first exhibited in 1907.
These good natured dogs tend to be slightly aloof;
befitting their aristocratic appearance, they do not suffer
fools! Afghan Hounds are natural athletes that require plenty of
outdoor exercise. They were bred to chase gazelles and other
swift game, so they require owners who can keep up with them!
Afghan Hounds are tall, slender dogs that stand around 27 inches
at the shoulder and weigh approximately 60 pounds. Their
trademark long flowing tresses are labor-intensive; Afghan
Hounds need frequent baths and brushings to keep them looking
their best. If you don't mind the coat maintenance, and
are looking for a beautiful, intelligent, dignified companion
that will definitely turn heads at the dog park, an Afghan Hound
puppy is a great choice!
