Product Description For centuries the Bernese Mountain Dog has served happily as a true friend of man. A peerless draft dog, the "Berner" drew small carts from farm to dairy of the milk so essential to the livelihood of rural Switzerland. At home, these wonderful dogs performed hundreds of vital tasks around the farmstead and provided companionship and protection to the entire family. Today ever increasing numbers of people are discovering the breed's many assets. Truly the Bernese Mountain Dog's time is coming. Some say it is already here. p In IThe New Bernese Mountain Dog/I, you will learn about the breed's origins and trace its path to world recognition. Best book for serious Berner owners November 27, 1998 56 out of 60 found this review helpful
The history of Bernese Mountain Dogs in America, their breeders and specialty show records set this book apart from the rest. If you own a Berner and want to learn about his ancestors, get out his pedigree and go to work. If he has distinguished ancestors, you'll find their pictures and records here. Extremely useful for those wishing to learn to pick good Berners. Illustrations make the breed standards clear and show common faults. Is your dog good enough to show? Do you think you are becoming serious enough to consider showing for confirmation or obedience? What about breeeding? With three Berners under foot, I refer to this book more than any other in my dog library.
Great for owners and new buyers of Berners. July 23, 2000 Bonnie K. Conrad (Gastonia, NC USA) 24 out of 30 found this review helpful
This was my second book on the Bernese Mountain Dog and by far the best. It gives great background info. It is so in detail about what to look for if you plan to show your dog. Not only in writing but in pictures. I refer back to this book alot. All beginners should have this book in their collection. I can not praise the Author enough. It's such a fine job of writing
One of the best on Berners December 3, 2002 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is one of the best books on Bernese Mountain Dogs. It has terrific information on the history of the breed and physical structure of the dogs. It contains excellent information on health problems which is critical to anyone who owns a Berner.pThis is not a coffee-table book so don't expect color photos. This is not a book about how to train a dog; check out clicker training books instead. This is a book about Bernese Mountain Dogs and is for people who are committed to knowing all they can about the breed.
Book for Hardcore Berner Lovers February 21, 2004 Moonrise (Washington) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is simply one of the best Berner books on the market today for people who want to seriously study this breed. pThis book is written as a comprehensive study on Berners, and includes superb information for breeders and exhibitors.pNewbies or people who are not hardcore Berner people may want to avoid this book because they'll probably find a lot of the information overwhelming and unnecessary.pBut for people who want a great in-depth perspective on the Bernese Mtn Dog Breed, this book is a MUST HAVE. As a breeder, and as an exhibitor, I use it often as a research resource.pIf you're a newer PET Berner owner, try beginning with a book more geared toward newbies in the breed like Julia Crawford's Owner's Guide to a Healthy, Happy Pet.
The Best Bernese Book I have found. May 31, 2005 Magnum P.I. (Costa Mesa, Ca United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
A book which is oriented towards showing and breeding.
br /But knowing what makes a good Bernese can't be bad for any puppy
br /purchaser either. This the best book I have found about the Bernese breed and I believe I won't need another on the Bernese now.
