The Sussex Spaniel is the perfect companion for dogs
owners with a sense of humor. This amicable spaniel is solid, strong and
somewhat stubborn, with a cheerful disposition and a great sense of
humor. The breed's somber expression belies the dog behind those soulful
eyes; a dog that regards people and other dogs with good-natured mirth.
A field dog since the early 1800's, the breed derives
it's name from Sussex, England, where it originated. The breed is
different from other spaniels in that it has a longer body and tail,
more natural coat and liver colored nose and rims about the eyes. A
medium sized dog, the Sussex Spaniel measures 13 to 15 inches and weighs
between 35 and 45 pounds. It has a flat or slightly wavy chestnut
colored coat and long ears covered in soft wavy hair.
The Sussex Spaniel makes an exceptional family
companion. It loves people - especially children, and is easy to train.
It's calm, amicable disposition makes it suitable to almost any
environment, whether country life or a city apartment. The breed is also
known to be a good watchdog. Grooming requirements are moderate; a good
brushing once a week and regular examination and cleaning of the ears
are necessary to keep the Sussex Spaniel looking and feeling it's best.
If you are looking for a loyal, loving and humorous
companion that is great with kids, the Sussex Spaniel very well could be
the breed for you!
