About the Pug

Whether you live in an apartment, or a castle, the compact, adorable breed known as the Pug makes an excellent companion! A favorite breed of royalty since the 16th century, the Pug was once thought to have originated in Holland, but is now considered an Oriental breed - the short-haired cousin to the Pekinese dog breed. The name "Pug" comes from the Old English word "pugg", which was a term of endearment.

Playful, mischievous, intelligent and affectionate, Pugs get along great with other family pets, and adore being adored by children. They love attention!

These dogs weigh from 14 to 18 pounds and come in solid black, silver fawn or apricot fawn with black mask and ears. Regular brushing is all the grooming this breed requires, and exercise needs are minimal.

Pugs tend towards being overweight, so diet must be carefully controlled (no matter how much begging takes place!). Pugs do well in both rural and urban settings, and are a great choice for elderly or disabled dog lovers!
