Peekapoo Dogs Information
Written by: Susan Elliott Alternate Names: Pekapoo, Peekapooh, Peke-a-Poo Common Misspellings: Pekapoo, Peek-a-poo, Peekapooh, Learn all about Peekapoo Dogs and Puppies through our indepth guide to the Peekapoo dog breed. You'll find solid information about Peekapoo dog history, Peekapoo life expectancy Peekapoo dog appearance, Peekapoo temperament and personality, Peekapoo health problems, Peekapoo puppy care, training Peekapoo puppy dogs and more. Also includes important information about choosing a responsible Peekapoo dog breeder. The Peekapoo Dog is a relatively old breed as crossbreeds go. The exact origin of the Peekapoo Dog is not definitively known. The most likely scenario was either an accidental cross between a Pekingese Dog and a Poodle or, breeders of the Cockapoo Dog decided to try their luck with a similar, small dog cross. The experiment (or chance encounter) was prolific. The Peekapoo was first established in the United States in the 1950s and was soon well known in North America for its delightful disposition (when socialized from a young age) and its adorable appearance. Peekapoo FactsThe Peekapoo Dog Breed In BriefCountry of Origin: United States of America Peekapoo Height: Varies depending on size of Poodle parent (Minature, Toy or Standard Poodle) that went into the mix. Peekapoo Weight: Varies as above. Peekapoo Color Variations: Apricot Peekapoo Peekapoo Size Variations: Varies from 4 to 20 pounds Peekapoo Exercise Needs: Reasonable Peekapoo Grooming Demands: Demanding Peekapoo Trainability: Medium Difficult Peekapoo Life Expectancy: 10 - 15 years Average Peekapoo Prices: $750 to $2500, depending on Pedigree Good With Children: No Good With Other Pets: Yes Breed Group: Peekapoo Dog HistoryPredictably, the Peekapoo is a cross between a Pekingese Dog and a Poodle. Typically, they are smaller than similar breeds - the Cockapoo for example. The Peekapoo Dog has a wide range of characteristics as the traits from the parents may not be equally split. This range of possibilities extends to appearance and temperament - no two dogs are alike! The true Peekapoo Dog is a purebred Poodle mixed with a purebred Pekingese, although it is common for breeders to breed one Peekapoo with another. The offspring of this mix, while cute, can lack the health benefits of the purebred poodle. Peekapoo Dog AppearanceThe Peekapoo Dog is heartmeltingly cute, particularly during the puppy stage. Their coats are neither too thick nor too curly and the shedding is minimal because the Peekapoo does not have an undercoat. This feature makes the Peekapoo an excellent choice for some people with allergies. Peekapoo GroomingThe coat of the Peekapoo grows slowly so trimming is minimal. Brushing, however is a daily requirement to maintain a matt-free coat and happy dog. Nails need to be trimmed and clipped regularly and a bath is a weekly requirement. Your Peekapoo may need more or less grooming depending on the genetic makeup of your dog. Peekapoo Exercise NeedsThe Peekapoo is an active dog. It will enjoy daily walks and play, especially and predictably duing the puppy stages. The Peekapoo will happily accompany a family or short-distance jogger. And really, what better time is there to take up jogging? Peekapoo TemperamentThe Peekapoo Dog can have a range of temperaments, depending largely on the temperaments and personalities of the parents and older generations. Typically, if the Peekapoo is socialized early all will be well. Be wary of small children annoying (or worse) your Peekapoo. Any dog, regardless of breed can bite if antagonized or provoked. Children, and indeed the dog owner can confuse small size for a docile nature. |
Peekapoo TrainingTraining a Peekapoo Dog can be relatively straightforward with the consistent use of a crate and litter box. Typically, dogs will not mess their crate and will make of habit of using the litter box when going outside is not an option. Another benefit of this strategy is that your Peekapoo will use a litter box if left alone for long periods or if the weather is inclement. If toys are placed in the crate, this may curb the desire to chew your shoes (and your desire to sell your dog!). Peekapoo HealthPeekpoos, if bred from purebred Poodles and purebred Pekingese Dogs, can inherit many of the health benefits from the Poodle, and although less likely, some of the breathing difficulties commonly associated with the Pekingese. It is always wise to check the breed history of your Peekapoo. Is the Peekapoo Right For You?The Peekapoo is a terrific pet. It can be loving and loyal, charming and fun. And, if you are an allergy sufferer, you need look no further. Well supervised children will be thrilled to have such a cute companion and seniors and the disabled will welcome the reasonable exercise needs. Peekapoo PricesAverage Peekapoo Price: $750 - $1000 Price always varies when it comes to the purchase of a quality, home-raised healthy Peekapoo dog or puppy. It's of utmost importance that you place the most weight on acquiring a great Peekapoo puppy from a highly responsible, reputable breeder, and put the price as a secondary concern in making your decision. Buying a Peekapoo dog or puppy at a cheap price from a breeder of questionable reputation can be a one-way ticket to heartbreak and great additional expense throughout the dog's life, should your Peekapoo puppy have hereditary health problems or behavior and temperament issues (which very often is the case with cheap-priced puppies). Buying from a highly reputable Peekapoo breeder is your best insurance for acquiring a well socialized, healthy puppy of stable temperament. Peekapoo prices also will vary according to the puppy's conformation; puppies placed as pets and companions will generally be less expensive as show-quality Peekapoo puppies intended to be shown in conformation.
