Origin:
The North American Shepherd (a.k.a. Miniature Australian Shepherd)
is the result of a breeding program that was begun in 1968 to
produce a scaled-down version of the Australian Shepherd. While
their unique size makes them suitable companion dogs, they still
possess the traits they were bred for - herding small stock.
Temperament: Versatile, enthusiastic and
quick to learn, the North American Shepherd is noted for being very
devoted to its owner. However, he may be reserved with strangers.
Activity level: An intelligent dog
that takes well to action, the North American Shepherd has proven to
excel at agility, flyball, therapy work and in herding small stock.
Height/Weight: The North American
Shepherd may be 14-18 in (35-46 cm) at the shoulder and weigh 20-40
lb (9-18 kg).
Coat: The coat is moderate in length,
straight or slightly wavy and has a soft undercoat.
Color: The breed may be blue merle,
red merle, black or red tri, all with or without copper/tan and/or
white trim.
Grooming: The thick coat needs
regular brushing to stay neat.
