 The
Lowchen, affectionately known as the "Little Lion Dog", is an
ancient breed that is cousin to the Maltese and Bichon Frise,
and like them, this lively little dog was revered among the
nobility as a pampered "lap dog". The Lowchen has been depicted
in paintings by many leading artists, including German painter,
Albrecht Dürer, who featured the Lowchen in many of his woodcuts
and paintings during the 1500's. The Lowchen trend faded for a
time, but was brought back during WWII thanks to the efforts of
a Belgian Lowchen fancier who was instrumental in keeping the
breed going. The Lowchen breed has since gained popularity in
the UK, the US and Canada as a beloved family pet.
The Lowchen's unique "lion-like" appearance is
achieved through grooming - the coat does not grow that way.
The unclipped areas of the coat are left natural and shaggy -
like a lion's mane. The Lowchen measures 10 to 13 inches at the
shoulder and weighs from 12 to 15 pounds. The Lowchen is alert,
intelligent, and affectionate - a loving companion dog with a
lively, outgoing, and inquisitive personality. |
