Italian
Greyhound History
The Italian Greyhound is an exceptional dog breed
with a rich history dating back to Ancient Rome. Originating in
Egypt more than 2,000 years ago, this very unique breed is
considered to be the smallest of the Greyhound breeds. The breed is
thought to have resulted from mating small Greyhounds. It's small
stature and high-stepping gait caught the eye of Roman nobility
after it was brought to Italy by Roman soldiers. This diminutive dog
was so revered by the ancient Romans that plaques have been
uncovered in the ruins of Pompeii inscribed with 'Cave Canem', which
is though to mean 'Watch out, don't step on the Italian Greyhound.'
In more modern times, the breed found it's way to Britain during the
reign of King Charles I, and soon became one of the more popular
toy breeds - as it remains today.
Italian Greyhound Description
Despite it's small stature and delicate
appearance, this breed has all the speed, agility and sporting
instincts of the Whippet - just in a smaller package. Charming,
intelligent, affectionate, loyal and devoted, the Italian Greyhound
is suited to almost any type of living quarters, from an apartment
to an acreage. Measuring just 13 to 15 inches at the shoulder, these
dogs need very little in the way of grooming, and are happy with a
daily outdoor walk or run. The short, fine and silky coat comes in
an array of shades including pied, black, blue, fawn, red,
chocolate, blue-fawn and red-fawn. (Brindle and Black and Tan IG's
are note eligible for registration). Italian Greyhounds do not have
"doggy odor", part of the reason they are so popular as house pets.
