Whether you're looking for an all-purpose hunting dog or a wonderful family pet, the German Shorthaired Pointer, a handsome, intelligent, capable and affectionate dog, is the perfect choice! Originally developed in Germany, where it is known as the "Kurzhaar", the German Shorthaired Pointer has been used to hunt fur or feather on land or over water, and has been renowned for it's hunting and tracking skills, pointing and retrieving ability, watchdog prowess and very likeable disposition since the 17th century.

Developed from a cross between the Spanish Pointer and the Bloodhound, the earlier Kurzhaars were heavier and less agile than the modern German Shorthaired Pointer breed. In an effort to create a faster dog with a keener scenting ability, English Pointer Bloodlines were introduced. Centuries of selective breeding for expert hunting ability have produced the clean look and abundant skills of this very popular breed.

The German Shorthaired Pointer was brought to North America in the 1920's, and has since grown very popular as both an excellent sporting dog and cherished family pet.  Sturdy, hardy and quite active, German Shorthaired Pointers have a short, hard, dense coat that comes in liver and white, liver roan or solid liver.

They require minimal grooming; a thorough weekly brushing and proper ear care are all that are required to keep your dog looking and feeling his best. Males measure 23 to 25 inches at the shoulder and weigh from 55 to 70 pounds, and females are two inches and 10 pounds less. These wonderful dogs love family life and do well in either a suburban or country setting. Plenty of daily exercise and attention is needed to keep your German Shorthaired Pointer happy and healthy.
