Dogue de Bordeaux Dog Breed Information Guide

About the Dogue de Bordeaux

Originally used as a guardian, hunter, and fighter the Dogue de Bordeaux has existed for centuries, although it's origins are the subject of some debate. Trained to bait wild animals, herd cattle and protect the homes and businesses of their masters, Dogue de Bordeaux dogs were highly valued by the noble and wealthy of pre-revolutionary France. The modern version of the breed was introduced in the 1960's by Dr. Raymond Triquet, who wrote the new breed standard. There were few, if any, of the breed in the United States until 1969, when Steve and Wendy Norris began a breeding program here with Dogues imported from Europe. Today, they remain a rare breed, but breeders can be found throughout the United States, whos selective and careful breeding has produced some of the finest Dogues in the world. The Dogue de Bordeaux are recognized world-wide by both the FCI and the UKC.
