Bearded Collie Puppy
Breed Profile |
Height:
20-22 inches Weight: 40-60 lbs. Life Span: 12-15 yrs.
Breed Group: Herding Dogs
Good With Kids: Yes
Exercise Needs: Moderate
Grooming: Demanding
The bearded collie probably originated in Scotland and northern England
in the 16th century. Originally used for herding sheep, it has become
increasingly popular as a family pet. The Old English sheepdog and the
Border collie are both descendants of the bearded collie. Bearded
collies are loving, affectionate, eager to please, and do well in
obedience classes. They enjoy being around people, including children
(whom they may try to herd) and other animals. They may bark when
visitors arrive but are not known for protecting property. Beardies can
live happily in rural, urban, and suburban settings as long as they get
enough exercise, playtime, and mental stimulation. The bearded collie's
outer coat is medium-length, straight, and harsh in texture; the
undercoat is soft. Coat color is black, blue, brown, or fawn with white
markings. The bearded collie needs to be brushed and combed at least
once a week to avoid matting. This playful, energetic dog needs long,
vigorous walks and daily playtime.
